With over 20 years of extensive experience, James is widely regarded as one of the leading practitioners in banking and finance, corporate restructurings and insolvencies. The joining of James will further enhance the overall strength of the banking and financial business of Jingtian & Gongcheng Hong Kong Office, and provide clients with more diverse and comprehensive legal services that meet market needs.

James’s practice includes structuring and negotiating transactions relating to syndicated lending, leveraged buyouts, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, investment grade and high yield bond offerings, medium-term-note programs, US and Hong Kong initial public offerings, privatizations, real estate finance, trade finance, project finance, corporate restructuring, reorganization and refinancing, revolving and working capital facilities, letters of credit, secured financings, and securitization and derivatives.
He represents leading investment and commercial banks, private equity funds, public and private companies, and PRC state-owned enterprises across a wide range of sectors including mining, real estate, international trade, retail, manufacturing, logistics and transportation, energy, health care and life sciences, food and beverage, education, advertising, communications, and information technology.
Prior to joining Jingtian & Gongcheng, James held senior positions at a US multinational law firm based in Hong Kong and at a US law firm based in New York. He has deep expertise in foreign direct investments into Greater China, acting for multinational corporations and private equity funds, as well as advising Chinese state-owned enterprises and private entities on outbound investments into the greater-China region, other Asian jurisdictions, and Mexico.
James earned his LL.B. and LL.M. summa cum laude from Peking University and his J.D. from Cornell Law School, where he was awarded a Full Tuition Fellowship. He is a Hong Kong-qualified solicitor and is admitted to the New York Bar. James is fluent in both English and Mandarin.
